Why do I love my garden to the moon and back? Because the power of the Moon and our place in the solar system have everything to do with how plants grow.

As missions like Artemis II take humans to the far side of the Moon, they remind us of the beauty of our blue-green planet and the importance of working with, not against, nature. In the garden, one of the first principles is that plants follow natural rhythms, not our calendar months and dates.

They respond to the Earth’s rotation, its journey around the Sun, and the specific climate of our own patch of land. Growth is guided by cues and cycles: light, temperature and rainfall, not by a fixed schedule. Planting or pruning by rote can easily become our undoing.

This philosophy echoes Artemis, the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and wild animals, a fierce, independent protector of nature. Like Artemis, we are reminded to respect and observe the natural world rather than try to control it.

Each garden holds the potential to be abundant and life-giving: a space where plants breathe, generate oxygen, and help lock up the toxins we create, while also offering us somewhere to pause and reflect.

So, as you plan your garden, think beyond the to-do list. Sow seeds when the soil is ready, check temperature and moisture, and notice how plants respond to the ebb and flow of the seasons. In the UK, we are fortunate to have rich resources, seasonal rainfall, and fertile land, so we should collect water and work with these cycles.
