March 2, 2026As a garden designer and someone who loves gardens in all their forms, from creating and building them to planting, sitting, and quite literally stopping to smell the roses, I’ve learned that what makes a garden truly work isn’t a particular style or trend. It’s the person using it.
The key to creating a joyful green space is understanding what lights you up. Is it dining outside on warm evenings? Is it the scent of flowers as you pass by? Is it pottering with plants, spending time with family, or gathering around a fire pit? Or perhaps it’s something far more practical—like making sure the paths aren’t muddy so you can walk comfortably through the garden, or simply reach your car without a struggle.
There are countless ways to experience a garden, and no two need to be the same. Good garden design begins with listening—really listening—to someone’s needs and their desire for connection with nature and with home. My role isn’t to impose ideas, but to help uncover what matters most and shape a space around it.
That process also means sharing inspiration, experience, and practical knowledge honestly, including how decisions affect cost and long-term maintenance. Transparency builds trust, and trust allows creativity to flourish.
I’ve been refining this approach since I founded Mimosa Design, and while I love sharing ideas, my real motivation is transformation. I want to help change as many gardens as possible, because changing gardens can genuinely change lives. It may sound ambitious, but gardens offer something rare: a space to slow down, reconnect, and find joy.
And there is nothing quite as rewarding as being generous with that knowledge—helping others experience the quiet magic a garden can bring.
