Tring and Wigginton Walk

A more challenging walk that climbs the Ridgeway before descending through woodland and back along the Grand Union Canal. There are some wonderful views.

 

Distance: 5 miles (allow 2.5 hours).

Start: Tring Station, Station Road, Tring HP23 5QR.

Access Information: Stile free. There may be horses in the fields between 5 and 6.

Refreshments: The Greyhound Inn and the Village Shop in Wigginton.

 

Route

Turn left out of the station and go over the canal bridge. Turn left along Beggars Lane for 150m and take the path on the right signposted for The Ridgeway.

  1. Continue uphill to meet a busy road. Cross, turn right up the surfaced path and the left towards The Twist.
  2. Cross the footbridge over the A41 and continue uphill through several gates to a lane.
  3. Turn right for a few metres, turn left up the steps towards Tring Park and stay ahead through several gates to a lane.
  4. Cross to the gravel driveway and follow it past the barrier into Tring Park. Turn immediately left along the edge of the wood and onwards to a surfaced driveway. Cross over and follow the path to a lane.
  5. Turn left along the lane to the T-junction. Turn right past The Greyhound to the pub car park. Cross the road to a path towards Crawley’s Lane. Go through the gate and continue downhill through three further gates into a wood. Follow the path straight down and out through the gate into a field. Continue directly ahead through three more gates to a path junction in the hedgerow. Turn right to join a concrete track down to a lane.
  6. Turn left under the flyover and take the byway on the right towards Cow Roast. Go through the gates of Tinkers Lodge and walk along the wide track to reach a busy road. Cross the road, turn right along the verge and turn left down Wharf Lane to Cow Roast lock.
  7. Turn left along the canal towpath and follow it to a road bridge.
  8. Continue forward for 1.5km to the next road bridge, Bridge 135.
  9. Go under the bridge and turn immediately right up the steps to the road. Turn left along it to reach Tring Station.
