RICK STEIN’S MISO SALMON
May 1, 2025Otago is an international programme that helps people improve their confidence in walking. The Otago Exercise Programme, OEP, is designed to reduce falls by increasing strength and balance.
In the over 75s, falls are the leading cause of injury, 10% of the UK ambulance call outs are for 65+ years who have fallen, half of which are taken to the hospital. Most falls happen during the day with 60% of ladies falling indoors, whilst 60% of men fall outside.
Most common injuries include cuts, bruising, dislocations, and sprains; but can also involve injury to wrists, spines and hips. This can result in fear and a decline in participating in physical and social activities. Thus, causing depression, isolation and more risk of falling.
OEP is a 12 week programme to prevent falls in older adults. It was developed and tested in four controlled trials by a research team at the University of Otago Medical School, New Zealand led by Professor John Campbell. It includes a warm up to promote mobility, strengthening with ankle weights for the lower body, balancing practises to encourage a stronger core and a cool down. All embedding good habits and confidence.
Overall Otago was effective in reducing 32% of the number of falls and 39% of injuries resulting from falls. It was equally effective in men and women. The Otago Exercise Programme will improve participants strength and balance and their confidence in carrying out everyday activities without falling. Helping older adults and those recovering from injury or operations alike.
