ANYONE FOR (TABLE) TENNIS?

Sociable, fun and not requiring participants to immerse themselves in a pool of their own sweat – Ping Pong is a sport for all.

Ping pong, also known as table tennis, is a fast-paced and enjoyable sport played by people of all ages and skill levels (even you!). Whether you’re looking for a casual pastime or aiming to become a competitive player, all you need to do is pick up a bat and find a willing partner.

What you need

A ping pong table (as likely to be found these days in your local park as your nearest community centre), paddles, ping pong balls and a net (15.25cm high and spanning the width of the table).

Basic rules

  • The game can be played as singles or doubles.
  • Sets are typically played to 11 points, and a player must win by at least two points.
  • Each player serves two points, then the serve switches to the opponent.
  • The ball must bounce once on your side before crossing the net, then bouncing on your opponent’s side for the serve.
  • Much as in the same way as tennis, if the ball hits the net during a serve but still lands correctly, it is a ‘let’ and the serve is retaken.

Fundamental techniques

Grip: The most common grip is the ‘shakehand’ grip, similar to shaking someone’s hand. Another popular technique is the ‘penhold’ grip, where the bat is held like a pen.

Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and body slightly forward for balance and quick movement.

Serving: Hold the ball in your open palm and toss it at least 16 centimetres upwards, striking it so it bounces once on your side and once on the opponent’s side.

Simple strategies

  1. Keep the ball low. Hitting the ball low and close to the net makes it harder for your opponent to attack.

  1. Vary your shots. Change the speed, spin, and placement of your shots to keep your opponent guessing. Caressing shots will generally win you more points than trying to smash the thing!

  1. Use your footwork. Good movement allows you to get into position for each shot. Stay light on your feet and adjust your stance as the ball moves.

  1. Practice makes perfect. To perfect your game, practise hitting the ball against a wall to improve control and consistency. And while it’s nice to win against an opponent, rallying with a partner to keep the ball in play for as long as possible will built confidence, whilst preserving relations!
