October 26, 2026Christmas is often described as the happiest time of the year. We are surrounded by images of smiling families, festive gatherings and celebrations. But for many people, the reality can feel very different.
Christmas can bring pressure to be happy, sociable and excited, even when that is not how we feel inside. For someone who is struggling with anxiety, depression, loneliness or difficult circumstances, this expectation can make an already challenging time feel even harder.
It can also be a particularly painful time for anyone experiencing grief. Traditions, familiar songs and family gatherings can bring memories of someone who is no longer there. Whether a loss is recent or happened many years ago, Christmas can make their absence feel especially noticeable.
Family relationships can bring their own challenges too. Spending more time together does not necessarily mean feeling closer. Old tensions can resurface, difficult relationships may need to be navigated and some people may find themselves feeling lonely even when surrounded by others.
There are practical pressures as well. The cost of presents, food, travel and socialising can create additional worry, particularly when household finances are already stretched. Trying to create the “perfect Christmas” can leave people feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
If you find this time of year difficult, it can help to give yourself permission to experience Christmas in a way that feels manageable for you. You do not have to accept every invitation, maintain every tradition or pretend to feel cheerful when you do not.
Taking time for yourself, setting boundaries and talking to someone you trust can all help. Sometimes, simply being able to say, “I’m finding things difficult,” can be an important first step.
At South Bucks Counselling, we know that difficult feelings do not disappear simply because it is Christmas. Having a confidential space to talk, without judgement or expectation, can help at any time of year.
SBC is a local charity providing affordable counselling and psychotherapy to adults in our community. Our aim is to offer a compassionate space where people can feel heard, understood and supported.
