Happy New Year! Dr Kathryn Miller MRCVS

The start of a new year is the perfect time to be thinking about your beloved companion and making sure you are up to date with preventative healthcare, to help keep him/her healthy this coming year.

Vaccinations – are an affordable and effective way of protecting your pet from a host of preventable and potentially fatal diseases. Some vaccines are required annually, others every three years. Your vet will check your animal’s records and see which ones are due to ensure your pet is not over vaccinated. Vaccine titre tests are also available on request to test your animal’s immunity before vaccination.

Parasite control – not only are parasites itchy and uncomfortable, they are also damaging to the immune system, and some parasites (E.g. canine lungworm) can cause internal bleeding and even death. Remember, parasites can spread between cats, dogs, rabbits and even people, so parasite protection is important for the whole family.

Health check – our vets include a full ‘nose to tail, and everything in between’ health check with the annual vaccinations. However, many animals could benefit from six monthly health checks, particularly elderly animals as they are more susceptible to illnesses. The sooner a problem is noticed, the more likely it can be helped. If anything is ever worrying you with your pet do not delay getting them checked over. Better to be safe than sorry.

Take a look into joining our Pet Health Club to reduce the cost of preventative healthcare and give you one less thing to worry about this year.
